The OSHA Hierarchy of Controls provides an effective framework for reducing weld fume exposure and addressing workplace hazards.
Start with the specific respiratory hazards, exposure levels and required protection. Half-mask respirators are compact and fit under many welding helmets. Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) use a blower to deliver filtered ambient air. Supplied-air respirators (SARs) provide breathing air from an independent source but may limit mobility because of the air hose.
Fit testing depends on the facepiece. Tight-fitting respirators require fit testing before initial use, when changing facepieces and at least annually. This includes tight-fitting PAPR and SAR configurations. Loose-fitting helmets and hoods generally do not require fit testing. Tight-fitting respirators also require a user seal check each time they are worn.
Assigned Protection Factor (APF) is the level of workplace respiratory protection a respirator is expected to provide when used correctly as part of an effective respiratory protection program. APF varies based on the respirator type, facepiece and operating mode. A hazard assessment can help determine the level of protection required.
