MIG Welding is widely used by professionals and amateurs alike, but few people really understand how each of the variables affect the finished weld. Designed to be understandable to the beginner, but with information even professionals can learn from, Ron goes step-by-step through the entire welding process and gives careful descriptions of how each factor affects the weld, including wire speed, voltage, stickout, gun angle, travel speed and gas flow. He also covers plug welds, patch welds, welding aluminum, using flux core wire. There is a special bonus section on Plasma Cutting. (70 min.)

Butt Joint MIG Welding Demo & Quality Check

After a butt joint is tack welded, see a weld being made using a push gun technique. See what to look for in a finished weld, on both the front and back of the weld. Look for good penetration into the metal without burn-through.
(Duration: 1 min. 13 sec.)

Patch Panel Planning

A common MIG application is patching an automotive body panel. See how to prepare for the patch by marking the area to be cut out for plasma cutting. A butt joint is recommended for the edge of the patch.
(Duration: 1 min. 05 sec.)

Lap Weld on Aluminum Plate

See a lap weld made on 1/4-inch aluminum plate, after cleaning the metal and tacking the joint at each end. The finished weld shows good fusion, with the weld flowing nicely into the plate on both sides.
(Duration: 56 sec.)

Beveling an edge with Plasma

See plasma cutting used for beveling an edge on heavy steel plate. While tedious with a grinder, beveling with plasma cutting can be done easily after setting up a simple guide. You can save hours of work using this process.
(Duration: 57 sec.)
