Project Submitted: 9/9/2016
I’ve seen a lot of teardrop style campers built out of big box store trailers. Unfortunately, they all have the same problem. These rickety trailers are only bolted together and not welded for stability.
I’ve built many trailers; both steel utility trailers and aluminum boat trailers. I haven’t attempted a tear drop camper trailer because the size of my family is prohibitive to this design. Four people and 3 dogs don’t fit into a teardrop too well, no matter how hard we may try to make it work. I’m a fan of 60’s style Shasta campers and my wife didn’t give me the “You’re insane” side eye look when I suggested we build one as a family and film the process. That in itself is a miracle.
The Shasta Astrodome has a cab over tongue design that I think would work well for our family. I’ve designed a 16’ camper with two bunks in the rear to house the kids and a queen bed in the cab over portion for my wife and I (that would also clear the Miller Trailblazer in the back of my truck.)
So far, the cut list has been started and I have 90% of the frame laid out ready to weld. All running hardware is awaiting its day to rule the open road (wheels, axles, springs, etc)
We just started this project assembly yesterday (9/8/16) and found this contest today. We've been collecting parts for a while now.
Build from the ground up.
-Planning on using all welding processes (MIG, TIG, SMGW) in various stages of the build.
-Cut and lay out frame
-Weld complete frame
-Welding axles, leaf spring hangers
-Weld and erect wall supports
-Camp like crazy!!!!!!
