The Rise of Welding Videos
For people who learn best by seeing and doing (a group in which many, if not most, welders belong), the advent of Internet video has opened up entirely new frontiers in the realm of welding education.
Instead of having to read about or look at static photographs of welding techniques, you can now see those techniques being performed live. What’s more, many video sites allow you to post comments or ask questions of the person who uploaded the video, making it almost like being in the room while the technique is being performed.
The ramifications of educational welding videos hold enormous promise for the advancement of the welding industry, both in terms of fostering interest in welding and increasing welding knowledge and expertise.
Of course, as with anything on the Internet, you must use caution when evaluating the credibility of the information. However, in the free market of ideas, the scales almost always tilt toward the truth.
What is your take on Internet-based educational welding videos? Do they hold the power to revolutionize the industry, or are they just another passing fad? Has a welding video ever answered a question that you weren’t able to solve using other types of media? What types of videos do you find helpful, and which ones are useless?

Videos can be a huge help in welding education. However, you can’t take the place of a great teacher who has the knowledge and technique, and practical experience to share with his/her students. Nevertheless, it’s a nice introduction to the process for the occasional welder.

I agree with emvdd. A person can read all the books on welding, watch all the videos, and sit thru all the lecture sessions but still won’t be a good welder.
The best way to learn welding is time spent behind the arc, practice.
Videos can and will be a big help to teach people the basics of welding, and welding theory. But when it comes to quality welding that comes with experience.
