As Always, Safety First When Welding

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Let’s face it. Safety is important, especially when welding. Below are a few tips to keep you safe and comfortable for those long nights in your garage.

Make sure you have a pair of welding gloves and I highly suggest sleeves, too. A pair of these will protect you from burns, hot parts, flying metal and arc rays. The rays from a welding arc will burn you faster than sitting on the beach.

Eye protection is also a must. Invest in an auto-darkening helmet for welding and have a pair of shaded safety glasses on-hand for plasma cutting. Anyone with a bad case of welder flash can tell you they would rather take a mixture of salt in the eyes.

When welding, it can get warm quick. There are some nice fresh-air breathing accessories on the market now. The Miller CoolBand™ is an integrated headgear cooling system that optimizes airflow under the hood, making it up to 8 degrees cooler while welding. I often use it when I am working long events and race tracks where we provide welding demos and offer free repairs on participants’ racecars. You wouldn’t believe the difference that fresh air makes.

In addition to the CoolBand, wearing a welder cap or beanie is nice too for soaking up sweat. A cap also adds extra protection from sparks or flying spatter when you’re welding out of position, like overhead, for example. Some of the nice beanies even cover your ears!

While multiple brands offer welding protection and accessories, you can visit MillerWelds.com for safety products like the CoolBand and other items mentioned.

Until next time, stay safe and have fun welding.

Miller to sponsor No. 19 Chevrolet Impala with Mike Bliss in Nationwide Series Top Gear 300 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Miller will partner with TriStar Motorsports to serve as a primary sponsor of the No. 19 Chevrolet Impala with driver Mike Bliss in the Top Gear 300 race this Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The partnership will mark Miller’s first NASCAR primary sponsorship endeavor.

“It’s an exciting time for us to be able to partner with TriStar Motorsports and Mike Bliss”, said Andy Weyenberg, Manager of Motorsports Marketing at Miller. “We believe in Mike’s ability and have worked with him at Xpress Motorsports when he won a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship and again at the Haas CNC Sprint Cup program. Miller products are used daily at many of these race shops, so when Rick Carpenter brought this opportunity to us, we thought it would be a great way to highlight our products to everyone from the casual hobbyist to the professional racer.”

TriStar Motorsports Driver Mike Bliss reiterates Weyenberg’s excitement about the partnership especially at the track where he recorded his last Nationwide Series victory in 2009.

“It’s an honor to once again work with Andy and Miller for this weekend’s race at Charlotte. Not only is their equipment first class, but they put a large emphasis on people and commitment which is just one of the many reasons they have a large global presence. I know we will represent them well and put on a great show for them and the fans.”

Tune into the Top Gear 300 race on ABC this Saturday, May 28 at 1:30 p.m. (Central). Pre-show coverage countdown starts at 1 p.m.
