Pipeliner's Rig BBQ Pit

Hello !

While working in the oil fields in Kern County I noticed a lot of the single handed weldors had a neat little BBQ pit on the back of their rigs. Would really like to find someone that is making these or some hints and tips how to make my own. Design ideas welcome . . . pipe sizes, materials, etc . . . They appear to be basically a piece of pipe, two caps . . . Some seem to be a lot fancier than others . . . .

I recently completed a basic welding class. At 53, learning to weld is somewhat of a challenge. I now have a very healthy respect for someone that can really weld well. I never realized how hard that "stack of dimes" was to come by. I can do alright with MIG . . . Stick ain't for "sissies" . . . TIG, well, thats pretty much one of those some day things . . .

My intention is to build some of those little pits as gifts for family members. Might say something that will be around a long time. Anyone got any info, suggestions, ie pipe size, componets to include, use caps for ends?, flat plate for ends? If you have any info that would help me construct one please PM me or post.

I'm really sick of seeing this Walmart Junk for small BBQ Pits . . . . I recently bought an all stainless steel "small" BBQ pit . . . . guess what, it came from China . . . beer cans were better made when I was a kid than this thing @ $185.00!

Really want to build something that screams "I'm American Made & Will Last Forever" . . . . kind of like my SCAG Mower . . . no doubt when you look at it, you know it was "Made in America"

Please more pipeline BBQ pit info . . . . I have been unable to find anything on the net . . .

i have seen a few of these pits . some built into the bed ,some bolted on to the back .some big and small it all depends what you have to use and how you want to do it. ill try to send some pics

I'd love to see a picture as well. sure sounds better than hanging a can of pork and beans off your smoke stack lol. I remember one year while working on a peterbuilt truck, we found a BBQ wired to the bottom of the guys oil pan. you know ............the small camping ones? lol lol lol. I couldent believe it. he was using it to heat his oil pan in the cold weather. lmao, things some people will do. back in the day, loggers used to put a full roll of toilet papper in a tobacco can, fill it half full of brake line antifreeze. the toilet papper would absorb the brake line antifreeze and dry up. when this was lit it would burn for hours and hours fume free. I'ts usually used to heat up an oil pan but some have used this to survive in thier trucks while broken down in 30 below weather. usually picker trucks because picker trucks sometimes go into the bush alone.

I built this one out of a 55 gallon maple syrup barrel,with an old steel forklift propane tank with an old ammo box welded to it for a firebox. The frame is a bit heavier than needed, but the material was free. the handles were in a previous life chipping hammers. I haven't painted it yet. That's where I ran out of time. The shelf is scavenged rectangular tubing tig welded together. (only reason I used tig was to play with a new toy!) It's not the prettiest thing in the world but looks weren't necessarily what I was after. It works great, and cost wayyy less than that Chinese piece of crap you're talking about. Speaking of which I have a couple racks of ribs in it I need to pull and eat.

find an old hot water heater and take out the tank, you dont have to build a full frame to reach the ground from waist high, you can make it slide into a receiver hitch, sky's the limit. this one is from a day when i had nothing to do, took about 3 hours

Blast it, powder it and slap a slab of beef in that puppy 4 me!

Hey Tac, I prefer to get my welding gases from Airgas, but your other "supplier" is pretty good too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya, Taco Bell has been pretty good to me. Great for fast spot welds!
