    Default Electrode Wire, ER70S-3 or ER70S-6

    What would the reasoning be for specifying ER70S-3 wire over using ER70S-6? Repairs to the frames on Dodge trucks specify S-3 and note not to substitute. The commonly recommended electrode is S-6 by most car companies. The shielding gas is 75/25. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

    While it doesn't answer very well why Dodge specifies S-3, maybe someone with more automotive experience can look at the differences in the wires and tell us:

    Here're the relevent excerpts:

    S-3: Our most popular MIG wire, SuperArc L-50, premium copper coated wire, is an excellent choice for 70,000 psi (483 MPa) tensile strength,
    carbon steel base materials. SuperArc L-50 has moderate levels of silicon and manganese for deoxidation and cleaning action. Designed for
    use on clean, oil-free, and rust-free base material. Will tolerate light millscale. SuperArc L-50 also has an excellent reputation for feedability
    and trouble-free performance. Shielding gases include argon/carbon dioxide blends, argon/oxygen blends, straight carbon dioxide.

    S-6: Lincoln’s premium copper coated MIG wire, SuperArc L-56 is an excellent choice for welding on metals with a medium to high presence of
    millscale. For best performance use on clean, oil-free, and rust-free base material. Best weld appearance and toe wetting when compared to
    ER70S-3 and ER70S-4 classifications. SuperArc L-56 has high silicon and manganese deoxidizer levels. Superior feedability and excellent
    arc characteristics are trademarks of SuperArc L-56. Shielding gases include argon/carbon dioxide blends, argon/oxygen blends, straight
    carbon dioxide, and three or four-part gas mixes.

    Because some idiot wrote the specificaton. 70S-6 will do you just fine, S-3 is used in alot of manufacturing applications to keep cost down, and since Dodge likely uses that in product whoever wrote up the instructions probably defaulted to the 70S-3 recommendation.

    I worked in some piss poor shops and even they were smart enough to buy S-6 wire , and i bet most of the buyers there didn't have degrees ....Bob

    It seems most of the people I sell 70S-3 to are welding Galvanized Fencing, corralls, or water Tanks using straight Co2. It seems to work better than S-6 on this stuff. Not much cheaper than s-6 L-50 list for .035 44lb is 1.93lb on L-50. 2.10 on 44 lb L-56. But hey .17 a lb adds up if you use lots of wire.

    A lot of manufacturers use S-3 especially in automated cells, all driven on cost.

    I haven't seen L-56 in a drum, but at weldingsupply.com L-50 is $1.26/Lb in a 500Lb drum while L-56 is $1.32/Lb on a 60Lb spool. I suspect one would use S-3 simply because S-6 isn't needed in some applications.
