    Default Electronic governor

    Has anyone ever retrofitted a Bobcat 250 with an electronic speed governor? There's nothing wrong with the mechanical one on there, I was just curious what it took to do it. I have another small genset (3500W) that has governor issues and was thinking about gutting the mechanicals on it and building up an electronic system. If I could get it to work, I may want to do it to the BC as well. I know it would take some sort of proximity sensor circuit on the rotating assembly and a servo drive for the throttle. The only thing I can think of to control it would be a programmable logic controller of some type. If anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear em.

    The main reason I'm even thinking about this is to get better frequency stability on the aux power, since it also backs up the house during storm season...SSS

    Hi Steve,
    I am sure it could be done with a PLC, servo, Hall effect sensor and a good programmer. The cost of all of this would probably be prohibitive though. It would probably take a lot of trial and error to fine tune it and keep it from "hunting". Why not use an aftermarket cruise control for a car? I have never installed one, but I researched them once with intentions of installing one on a car. They are 12v DC operated, come with the servo and sensor to attach to the driveshaft and the user control to mount on the dash. You might be able to make it work as well by putting the sensor on your engine's crankshaft and connecting the servo to the throttle linkage as it would be mounted on a car's engine. I am sure there are many aftermarket suppliers, JC Whitney for one.

    Just a thought.

    I have come across an outfit that builds a controller for the little Ford and GM 4-cylinders and other various gas engines. I will try and find a name for you in the next couple of days. I am not sure but the ones I were looking at ran the fuel injection for that purpose. But they made a lot of other styles also.

    Thanks for the links...I'll look through them and see what I can find. It's probably going to be cost prohibitive, but I like a design challenge even if it never gets built...SSS

    Hi steve one time I had an old lincon with a single cyl briggs given to me that had the set up you are talking about on it it was a 16 horse I believe. you migth want to check out there online tech manuals to see if there is something there that migth help you out .that was before I got the blue bug that cant be shaken.
