certification

I know I could dig through the aws site and find this answer, but this is easier and more interesting.
I have a guy working for me that had worked for the same company for 20 years as a journey man millwright and needs to get his his certification. He is a very good welder, actually a excellent welder-fabricator, but needs to get his cert. What does he need to do to test ? I couldnt even tell you where his knowledge comes from, I think it was on the job? or school probably 25 years ago. we are located in southern Wisconsin.

From what I've read, The company that wants the cert sends you to the testing lab to be tested. When I went to school the instructor was a cwi, he provided plates that we welded and took to a lab for testing.

There are lots of different certs for different processes. positions, thicknesses, materials and so on. The weldor needs to know what cert he needs, and test for it

The actual AWS Base level cert. requires the welder to plasma cut multiple pieces of metal then set up an SMAW(shielded metal arc welding) welder and do beads then a butt and then a T weld after they must do the same for GMAW(gas metal arc welding) and FCAW(flux core arc welding)

Re: Plasma: Is that to ensure the person being tested knows to take the dross off before butt welding the coupons?

We had an ironworker at school for dicing coupon stock, and my instructor was also a CWI. Plasma doesn't make much sense.

Has any one had their shop certified for the welding fabricator ? If so what all did that take-besides $1700 of your dollars ? The way I read it- you can certify the shop and not the individual employees ? But then after reading through all the print it seems that this is set up more for a larger scale fab shop and not a 3 employee or less shop ? Many of the questions on the check list I have to answer no to, it seems the paper work is looking more at the way the shop is structured with its employees then the actual welding being done. Not to mention this is a 3 year cert and requires another re-cert and $1600- yikes !

to become cert. I belive he will have to do a vert and a overhead bend test plate with 3/8" plate. 6010 for the root and 7018 for the face. hope I helped

im from wisconsin just checked out what i got to get cert and it is use 7018 on 1/2 inch vertical up then bend test

As asked, the question is really too broad to answer. There are many certifications one might deal with. It really depends on what the employer needs you to have.

In Oklahoma, we have a state certification system, but all that really does is get you on a job site to take the employers test. Some employers will accept the state certification but most will require their own test.

Even if you have an AWS cert, most employers still make you take their test, from what I've experienced anyway.

go on the internet for Wi dept. of commerce, then click on safety and buildings, next click on the welding tab and you can find out all the info you need. in Wi structural tests are given by state certified weld test conductors and the welders are registered with the state, the conductors can give your guy any test you want providing you have a WPS to test him by. hope this helps.
