Just a quick question: Anybody got any hardfacing tips? I have a ten inch rock/hard ground auger bit that is starting to show a far amount of wear into the factory surfaced areas around the tip. I've never h/f anything before, so I thought I ask around before I go to blazing on a $1500 bit. SSS

We hard face vibratory plow blades. [for buring cable]we use 5/32 "hardfacing rod" couldnt find a number on the box. DC reverse polarity and about 140 amps. Its good stuff. Welds real smooth. doesnt grind real easy but it can be done. For an auger I'm assuming its the kind you set posts with. Our smallest auger is 24" [setting poles]. We dont hardface those they have replaceable teeth and the main part seems to hold up good. Although we have no rock, mostly sand/clay. You'd be surprised how long a bead of
ER70s will last. tough . good luckScott

Hardfacing is a fairly easy process, talk to your rep at your local WS for a good recommendation on what type of rod. One thing to look out for is that your weld doesn't start spalling or peeling off after it begins to cool. If this is the case you can try laying down a "pad" of weld with ER70xx then hardface over the top of that.

Thanks for the tips. This auger is for post/pier applications. It has replaceable conical "bullet" style teeth as the primary working surface. The factory hardsurfaced around the outer edge of the bottom flutes to act as a wear surface for lateral pressure. I'm about down to the base metal (3/4inch fluting) so I'll see how the touching up goes in the worst areas.
