    Default Narrowing a bucket

    8ft. wide bucket from a Lull. Customer needs it to be about 6ft. wide. Their reasoning is it gets used to load the salter/sander in their pick up & it is wider than the unit so salt is always being dumped on the cab or on the spreader motor. New bucket is $3500 so this one gets narrowed. Even if they bought a new 6ft. one this one would rot away in the back so this was the cheapest option.

    Cut 10" out of each side because that is what was in between the wear bars. The finished unit will be 6ft. 4in. All tacked up now, just need to weld it up.

    I should of noted that the only thing they use this bucket for is loading salt & banking snow piles after large storms. Not really the perfect machine for them but this is what they got.

    Looks good. This may sound like a simple question, but I have not worked on a bucket yet. But how thick is your typical bucket (like that one)

    I cut it with a plasma. I layed it out with a straight edge & soapstone & freehand cut it.

    This bucket is 1/4" thick floor with a 3/4" cutting edge. The angle braces on the backside are 3/8" thick.

    Smaller tractor type/skid steer buckets are usually 1/8" or 3/16" floor. Larger ones & backhoe loader buckets are usually 1/4". Medium excavator buckets are usually 1/4" or 3/8" thick.

    If you look at my first pic you will see the two wear bars that go under on each side. I just cut out the section in between them. I thought that would be the least amount of work vs. cutting the end plates off because of the wear bars.

    Typical backhoe or skiploader bucket, 1/4' walls, floor, sides, and top. Cat 966, more like 3/8", 988, about 1/2'. 992, 3/4". It's been a few years, so I might be off a few eights of an inch.

    I haven't done a 994 yet, so I can't say.

    By the way, I generally weld a few serious braces in between the top and bottom, before even thinking about the torch.
    Obviously, I'm just a hack-artist, you shouldn't be listening to anything I say .....

    A couple finish pics. Just need to bolt the edge back on. I thought I had one rightside up. Guess not, but anyway you can see a good shot of why I cut it where I did. By doing it this way I didn't have to mess with the wear bars & it left me a nice trough to weld in. Beveled the inside some, then welded. When doing the outside I back ground it so to have 100% penetration. The Z shape cut on the edge was just to go around the bolt hole which landed right on the cut line. Welded with MM200 using ESAB 7100 ultra .045 wire & 75/25 gas.
