I have a problem with the following situation: I have to weld a L shape 4”x 10” , 5/16” thick and 6” wide to the bottom part of a W 16x50 25 l.f. which thickness of the flange is 5/8” and wide is 10.25”, is not flush, 5” deep. The rod have to burn the ceiling of this flare-bevel joint and the rounded corner of the flat bar or plate, I think 2 passes would be reasonable, the first overhead to get a lower ceiling and start to close the gap of this joint and the second or third a little horizontal to get a good bond with a 1/8” 7018 rod at 140 amperes. The gap is 1/2" and deep is like 1/4" I’d like to listen commentaries. The diagram tells a lot. Thanks in advanceFLARE BEVEL JOINT GROOVE-NELSON-ACADEMY BEAM W16X50-DETALLE-EXPORT 2D.jpg

You may want to DELETE this post and survey
and then repost it in the WELDING DISCUSSION forum...
not likely to get a lot of response in the MOTORSPORTS forum
to that question...

I'll go first. Having no clue what this does or how many you have to do my opinion is 3 passes. Just like you would do any other normal fillet. 1 root pass, 2 fill in bottom, 3 fill in top.
Is this the only weld to hold it on or are you going to weld other sides also?MM250

Per AWS the flare bevel joint needs to be filled all the way flush. So however many passes that takes is what you want.
