    Default 90 Amp arc

    I've got one of the harbour freight specials tig/arc welders and was wonderin what was the thickest material I could weld on the arc setting at 90 amps.

    Which model did you buy? I looked at what they offer and the cheaper of the 2 tig/arc inverters says 18 ga. to 1/4" with stick and 22 ga. to 1/8" with tig. It really depends on what you are trying to do. On something NOT CRITICAL in mild steel with stick you could likely weld thicker than that but it depends on how much of your life you want to spend on each weld.---Meltedmetal

    That machine no way in he-ll is it capable to weld 1/4" in one pass .

    I agree it certainly would be a challenge. I don't have any inverter machines so I can not speak to their capability. As I said it depends on what you expect. I would hope that no one is buying a $200.00 welding machine to do high volume and/or critical production work. At 90 amps, if I looked at the right machines, he is already at less than 100% duty cycle and we don't know how experienced he is. Even with my old AC machines I am confident that I could weld 1/2" plate at 90 amps with 6011. No, it won't be x-ray quality, no, it won't be pretty, no it is not something I would do on a critical part, and depending on how long a weld it was, it would probably take a long, long time with many passes. Would I do it? Not unless there were some very unusual circumstances because I have better options but I think it could be done. I would not however recommend it.---Meltedmetal

    I bought this Harbor Freight 120 volt inverter for a quick job where there was only 120 VAC available.

    I know it's not much for power and you get what you pay for but I was able to get the job done quickly.

    Here is tig bead on 1/8" stainless sheet with the welder maxed out at 80 amps.

    Base is 3" x 5" and short piece is 1" x 4".
    1/16" tungsten - .040" ss wire.

    It was tricky to scratch start so I used a piece of copper flashing to start the arc.

    I tigged as my stick weld skills are terrible.
