Cost of Used Welders - Realistic?

I watch the Craigslist listings just for something to do as I'm pretty much a buy it new person. Are 20 & 30 year old welders really worth $2000 and more?

Examples (Charlotte, NC):
- Miller CP-302 mig/stick - $2500
- Miller Welder dela 452w - $2800
- Miller Deltaweld 450 - $2000
- Miller Deltaweld 452/60 - $2500
- Miller SYNCROWAVE 300 - $2500 (no pulse or meters version)

Non-of these are even close to new. Lots of what I see is from the 1980/90s.

Are these prices realistic? Seems everyone who posts these things think so. If they're finding buyers I guess they are I suppose.

Deltawelds are great machines. Used a 452 for years. If I had a need I would get one. Not sure on what they are worth though. FYI Deltawelds are 3-phase only.

Saw a Sync 300 awhile back in what looked like pristine condition for maybe $1,200. and I think it had some accessories.

CP-302 is a 3 phase machine and does not do stick. CV only.

Part of what you see here is that high priced welders tend to stay on the market for an extended period, because their owners are unwilling to lower the price to market value. If it is a good deal it will be on the market a very short time. I suspect that if you contacted those sellers, and then recontacted them a month later, the welders would not have sold, or would have sold at a lower price.

As far as the Syncrowave, a lot depends on what comes with it, torch, cooler, etc.

I am with you, however, that asking half of the new price for a 20 year old welder is not a good deal. I am more interested in relatively recent equipment, and I have done pretty well buying almost new welders off Craigslist. I do have an older inverter welder in the shed, but I only paid $500 for it.

I wonder sometimes if the seller really wants to sell. If he was serious about selling it, he would lower the price until it sold, but some equipment seems to be on craigslist week after week, and the price never changes.

A current production Syncrowave 250, probably fairly comparable to the 300, retails for under $4000 for just the power unit, or under $6000 for the power unit, cooler, and everything else you might want. On the internet you could get a new complete 250 for under $5000.

The other thing that you don't know is whether the price shown is the asking price, or if it is firm. It may be that the $2500 Syncrowave could be bought for $2000 cash, especially if it has been on the market for a while. Based on some web searching, I think that $2000 is probably closer to market price. Is it worth $2000? Maybe, if it comes with everything and works well. Some people really need the 300 amps of output, but can't pay $5000.

Always good deal used. All my Miller welders were bought slightly used at great discounts. Just need to be patient and look around. Ebay has some good deals at times too.

I just picked up a Milller Dialarc HF-P, which is a different class of machine than you're looking at, with 3 Victor flow meters w/ hoses, 2 water cooled TIG torches w/ hoses and a Miller foot pedal w/ all hookups for $753.00. The only thing I didn't get was the water cooler. I really didn't want to go that high, but since the machine was hardly ever used and was in great shape and that it also came with all the extras, I thought it was a fair deal.

I do have another Dialarc without HF that I purchased in 2008, that came with 2 50 ft. sections of lead, for $200. It's been a great running and smooth welding machine.

Now that I have the other one with HF I'm going to give the old one to my grandson who's 19 years old and learned to weld on this machine, when he was 12 years old.

If I was going to sell the old machine, instead of giving it to my grandson, I would put a price of $300 to $350 on it and in the area where I live, it would be gone in a short time.

Keep looking, sooner or later you'll find something with a lower price. There's good deals out there.

Someone wants to give me 2500 (maybe less) for a 300 synch I will have it up on the forklift in about 10 minutes.
