If its big pipe you also might want to consider one of those weed burners hooked up to a propane tank provided your just trying to take the chill out of the pipe.

Preheating Prior To Welding Alloy Steel Pipe.
I use propane for Pre heat due to cost of acetylene. H/D weed burner for the big stuff or propane Rosebud tip on torch for smaller things.
Use Laser Thermometer to read temp.
