Question about putting the spool of wire in.

I am curious, I went to put the spool of wire in and BAM BINGO, I had that stuff start a mess. I wasnt thinking about that happening.


SO anyhow my question is when putting a spool of wire in. Should I tighten the nut tigher, then maybe loosen it up after i get the wire started.


How tight should it be for normal use without it balling up on me. Must have taken me 45 minutes to untangle that stuff and get it wrapped back up.

Thanks in advance, I know its really Noob Stuff, but i dont want to burn anything out with theh spool to tight. But at the same time I dont want to go through the tangle nitemare.

The spool should barely have any tension on it so to not burn up the drive motor. Use just enough to keep the wire from rats nesting. It is directional also, the wire should exit the spool off the bottom so it is a straight shot into the drive rolls. Using care when swapping spools is a must obviously. I keep the wire end attached to the spool until I have the spool mounted into the machine. Less chance of accidentally letting go.

On some Lincoln's wire feeds from the top of the roll. You simply want the wire going into the drive setup on a straight path. On my Hobart 210 it feeds from the bottom. Many of the bigger machines such as a Lincoln 215, wire feeds from the top of the roll. Put your roll on, put on the retainer ring, then cut the wire and feed it into the guide and drive rolls.

I can see that. I got the millermatic 211. I know feeds from the bottom. I was just real suprised when i unhooked the wire after putting the spool in, and it was like something from a movie. I never thought about it unwinding the way it did.

For attaching a large spool, you can crank the spool retainer nut as hard as you want, though finger tight is fine. It is the spring nut that holds the spindle to the housing that you need to pay attention to. It should only be tight enough to keep the spool from free wheeling + 1/4 turn.

The wire can come from the manufacturer with free spool tension on it which helps feeding, but also causes problems.

Another thing to remember, once you unwrap the end of the wire, never let go of it until it is in the hose liner.
