Do I have the amp's too high when the rod is only two inches left and it is red red hot in color when I pull away, and I mean the whole of the rod. I open the holder, drop the remains of the rod on the floor and it is bright red.
My Dynasty does not make the rod red at 70 amps but the CST 280 does. Digital display on Dynasty but just a nob on the CST 280, so not as precise.
May sound a stupid question but it is very visible.
Thanks for answer in advance.

What size rod is this, a 3/32 runs at 85A or maybe a pinch more.

Shoot, that's how I know my machine is running a good heat. I set it at 90A for 3/32, and it will almost always turn cherry by the time the rod is burnt. Only time it's a problem is if you have to bend your rod, as it will always heat up right at the bend and sometimes falls apart.

7018 rod.
No that is pretty common for 7018 to burn hotter than other rods. You can run 3/32 rod all the way up to about 90 before it would get too hot. In general that rod gets hotter as the rod burns down

No, it shouldn't turn red hot like this. Something is wrong.

Red is good if you get too the end of the rod it should be glowing orange and your slag should be peeling off behind you

Are you talking about the whole stub that turns red? When I use 1/8 7018 the tip of it always glows bright orange for a while. 7018 runs hot, so I imagine if it turns orange with 1/8, 3/32 would light up pretty good.
