I'm in the process of building hinges & a tree for the "Z"s front end. I plan to drill & tap a couple plugs & weld them in the frame rails to mount the hardware.
My question is...... would it work to weld stainless plugs in the mild steel frame rails & use stainless bolts?
How well does SS weld to MS?
Would the stainless be more trouble than it's worth? I have both in stock.
Maybe I'd be better off with a MS plug & just put a little anti-seize on the threads?

You can TIG the stainless to the steel with 309-309L filler wire. Myself I'd go for the stainless although the mild steel and anti seize will work too. My personal preference is the stainless. I have lots of things stainless that really don't need to be.

Welding stainless to mild steel you will have to worry about it cracking. Due to the fact they are different metal and puritys. Just don't let it cool down to fast and red wheel it when your finished and I would white wheel it to.you also have to remember that when using mild steel to stainless it will rust because it would be contaminanted because of the welding and grinding.

Stainless
I like stainless and use whenever I can.
That said stainless steel bolts are not as strong as grade 8. A SS bolt is about like a grade 5.
I'd go the never seize way.
