I want to build a bumper for my ATV using 1/1/2 round tubing, i seen a pipe bender for sale for 50 bucks but im not sure if it will bend what im wanting to bend,
http://www.princessauto.com/workshop...ic-pipe-bender
thats a link to basically the same thing i can get for 50 bucks, but im kind of new to this and unsure if the metal to build a atv bumper would be bendable with this machine....
any info would be greatly appricated.

would this work?

it will work but not to perfection as the diameters of the pipe and tubing are different. the tubing being narrower will tend to get distorted in the bends. imagine looking at the egg from it's side laid flat. i have the hf bender which looks the same as the one in the link and that is what happened when i bent some tubing. i haven't tried it but i have heard that if you take some thin sheet metal and form it to fit the die it will stop the egg shaping.....jim
one more thing to consider is that it will be hard to get small radius bends with this bender, which i think you will be trying to get on a atv guard. you might cap the tube with a plug and fill with sand and and use heat to bend the tight bends. that has worked for me.Last edited by jbmprods; 02-25-2011 at 12:09 AM. If you want to use that bender why not make the bumper out of 3/4 or 1" pipe?
I have read (it's on the 'net so it must be true
) of people bending pipe in the bender then cutting it lengthwise to line the die to make it the right size. Since 1.5" pipe is 1.5" on inside, whereas 1.5" tubing is 1.5 on outside, it seems as it could work but I've never done it myself.

i was thinking the same thing. just use pipe of appropriate outside dimensions but the problem would still be trying to make the tight bends associated with such a small bumper. unless that bender comes with smaller radius dies than the hf bender. but then on the bigger bends he could use the bender and other means on the tight ones.
