Why exactly is using for? Is it just for welding very thin materials?

Pulse is not only or very thin materials although it does help to keep heat low when doing such materials. It can also be used to help you time your filler "dips" or where, conversely, you are not using filler and you just want a nice even change of temperatuire for that "stack of dimes" appearance. It's a very useful feature once you get used to it

There is a better description in the manuals for Miller and other machines that have that feature.
