Haha seems half the jobs I do end up being free. Either friends or family or some sob story and I'm a sucker.

It sounds like the craigslist adds that I see all the time.
I do things for friends and family for free but it really costs me money when I do it.

There is one guy here in the twin cities advertising welding for $25 an hour and $40 if he comes to you. I want to know how he can pay for the consumables.

I have quit doing charity work, I have to get something because I have way too much paying work to be putting off to do something for free.

I spoke too soon, I have a project on the welding table right now that I am almost paying the customer to let me weld. I honestly thought it would be a couple hours well I am into it for about 5 and not done. I know the customers budget is a lot less then what I will have into it. I'll end up eating half the difference and hope he is happy.

This is not the norm for me but I think to keep all parties happy this was the best choice. Afterall word of mouth will make you or break you.
