I posted this proposed project a few months back, looking for some beam sizing. I eventually told the client to get the project properly engineered then I would be happy to weld it. As you can see the handrails are not finished yet. The owner wants to finish it off with wood
The engineer spec'd the posts out as 3" x 3/16" A500 steel. The rest is 4" and 6" A36. The ground level flight of stairs had been acquired by the client. I installed those and added the remainder of the project, which cantelivers over his driveway.

Despite the fact that it appears to be painted in red oxide primer that is the finish coat. Dupont "Country Redwood" in a satin finish. The owner wants to fill the handrail openings with 2" pressure treated wood and asked me to drill the rails so he could screw them in. I passed on doing that, telling him to put a few pieces in place, then call mwe back when he wants it done right. I suggested using some 10 gauge 2" welded wire that looks like this:

Also he wanted the handrail to go through the rain gutter, since that was where it "fell" in the placement of the stairs:




Being a pipe welder I had never had the opportunity to do a project like this. It was a good challenge getting everything together, bolting the catwalk to the house, etc. Project was welded with an MM250, XP140, TB302 and my Sync 200.
And for all those ready to holler about the 4" sphere code requirement, the owner is fully aware of it and plans to address it with his "wood".

Nice job.

Too bad your customer couldn't have moved the staircase one foot from the house so that the railing would be outside the gutter. I think that it would have looked better.

Too bad it no longer meets code with the handrail going through the gutter, nor does it pass the 4" sphere rule. I'd be curious to talk to the engineer or the inspector to find out how that got passed.

Don't ya just hate it when the customer is spending some pretty good money to do the kind of work you want, but they have always got some STUPID thing you just can't seem to get out of their head??
Man that seems like a big bunch of over hang on them little posts to just look at it.
Glad an engineer signed off on that one.
Got any picks of the "hanging" process? I am also curious about how the top fastens to the building and if there are other fastening methods in between.
Did you do much on site or was it mainly pre-built in shop?
If these questions were already asked I'm sory I was just too lazy to go back and re-read, but I love those pics

Thanks for the compliments. I built the sections at my house and trailered them over to the site. I set the posts and used a laser level to mark the height where the platform section would land and tack welded a piece of angle at each mark, then lowered the platform in place. Talk about level, the platform was .004" off level over 10"! After the platform was in place I attached the lover stair level and measured for the upper level. To tie the upper catwalk into the house I cut back the stucco to the framing members and glued and screwed 2 layers of 3/4" plywood to them to bring the mating surface out square (stucco is never true). The catwalk was then attached with 12, 1/2" x 3" lag screws and caulking placed into any voids between the stucco and the plywood. After the catwalk was in place I could accurately measure the upper stair rise and tied it in in a similar fashion.
