This is the first time I have ever tried to fuse mild steel to stainless steel.
The mild steel plate is 50 x 3 x 16mm and the stainlees plate on top is 20 x 3 x 6mm.

Using a 316 rod the results are pretty good.
The welds are not that attractive but they should get the job done.

Hi Rob Tech,
They are not that hard to make and they can be made out of mild steel as well.
I was going to make them out of titanium but 3mm or 1/8" Ti plate is hard to come by. I have 1.6mm or 1/16" Ti plate but it would act like a knife and cut through my boot, I also have 5mm or 1/4" Ti plate but this would be overkill.
Ti would have to be bolted on to rather than just welding on. Chrome molly would work great as well if you have access to it in plate form.

Just in case there is a metric-imperial issue with scale of the welds here is a image with a match head placed on the plates.
This should give an idea of how small the welds are.

Try using 309 rod when welding steel to stainless. Come out nice. Stainless takes a little less amps than mild steel. Cool project. Cool way to make the spikes. I used to have a KX250.

Hi TJ,
I would like to use 309 but none of my welding supplies stock it because everyone uses 316.
Crazy
They are not hard to make but make a big difference when riding in mud.
Thanks for the kind words
