    Default CWB and Red Seal ticket

    I'm going to be looking for a job soon, so I decided I'm going to write the Red Seal ticket(with 17 years in the trade). Just wondering if anyone here has done their testing for SMAW all position for the Red Seal ticket through a local college(I'm in Ontario). My work only issues "internal" tickets....so I need to get tested somewhere else.

    My big question is...did the Ministry give you a hassle about testing through the local college. I asked the Ministry questions...and they had no answers. Hope to hear from someone in the know...

    The red seal is the InterProvincial journeyman certification in Canada, it is a written related knowlege test. If you are challenging your journeyman status, for example you have the experience but no TQ's, then there will be a practicle test involving various welds to demonstrate mastery. CWB tests have nothing to do with the red seal or journeyman TQ tests.

    What trade have you spent 17yrs. in ?
    I wrote my Ironworker Journeyman Qualification in 1977, Not sure how long the Red Seal has been around ? I'm in Ontario also.
    I was in Local 736 Hamilton, Ontario.

    Angry Red Seal

    Hi There in order to challenge the red seal exam you will have to complete a form showing your experiance in the trade as well as having a certified tradesman sighn off on your hours in the related trade they have to put there certificate number on the form also.
    Before you send it in for approval you must also (if your are challenging) supply a copy of a CWB OR TSSA all position SMAW.
    I know this as I did the same thing.
    If you have the pocket size tickets from your place of employment showing your all position smaw process then just copy them and send that.they ask for S classification but anything above that works, (class T or R OR 6G)
    Reason for having to do a Cwb or tssa test is to show that you can weld and are not just studying the book and passing even though the cwb test is fairly simple. the TSSA 6G I found a little more difficult!!!
    Also CWB sells a package called the RED SEAL upgrade program they are very good books.
    If you still want to CWB test through a local college the ministry doesnt mind!
    I also live in ontario,and am a welding instructor for our local college,I am red-seal welder/millwright and am CWB Certified.

    Where abouts do you teach?



    Also, the other Norm(great name)......I'm actually a Steamfitter by trade, but have been welding the whole time(mostly Tig for the last 10 years). I work at Siemens Turbine division in Hamilton, but its closing the doors next year. Gotta get plan "B" ready. Time will go by fast.

    Sorry about that comment, spoke too soon, I guess the provinces have different requirements for challenging the red seal. I didn't know that the CWB got involved... I was speaking mainly about having out of province tickets and challenging the red seal in a different province.. No physical re-testing is required.

    Default Red Seal Testing

    I'm not sure about Ontario, but for the Alberta Journeyman test it consists of 4 welds, all full penetration v-groove welds.

    1. Vertical, With GTAW (TIG) Root - 7018 fill and cap
    2. 45 Degree Overhead - 6010 Root - 7018 fill and cap
    3. Overhead - 6010 Root - 7018 fill and cap
    4. Horizontal - 6010 Root - 7018 fill and cap

    each coupon is cut in half and one is bent on the root side, the other on the cap.

    If you're challenging the Red Seal with a provincial Journeyman Ticket already I don't think you have to do the weld test.

    If you are challenging for the red-seal you dont have to do a weld test! BUT
    You must prove you have 6000 hrs in the trade in a apprentise program or proof of working that time under a INTER-PROVINCIAL Licensed Tradesman welder as well as a all position
    SMAW OR GMAW OR FCAW OR GTAW. Through CWB OR TSSA
