I have been working on an iceboat, almost complete! Should go 50+ MPH on a smooth Icy lake!

Looks nice and like it's going to be a blast to ride. Too bad I have no knowledge of sailing so it wouldn't do me much good. I'd have to have one with a motor on it to be able to enjoy.

What materials did you use to make the frame? Is that aluminum or powder coated or painted steel?

Have you ever thought of mounting an engine and propeller on the rear similar to an everglade boat?

I built the frame out of aluminum. Trying to stay away from engines, it makes it a cost free sport that way. Ice boats are known to go 5 times the speed ot the wind, so a 20mph wind = 100mph. No friction to slow you down

I always found that Nacra's went faster with the bows fairly deep, rather than bow up...

And with one of those, how can you look at yourself with a sunfish sail on the ice boat?

Yes, True...But there is nothing better than putting one of your pontoons over a speed boater as you fly past them! and to see the looks on there faces

I learned to sail on water with a sunfish when i was 8 so I figgured I would start small on the ice to. Dont want to get in over my head yet!

Sails unfortunately for me would be a one way trip.... downwind then have to be towed back to point of origin. I think I'd have to build my ice boat with an engine just as my watercraft.

Now what would really make the power boaters go nuts is if you could pull a water skier or two. Imagine the look on their faces seeing that!!!

This is your first ice sailer? I have sailed hard water off and on since 1984.Your rig looks light and should run ok. A couple of words of advice,longer runners to prevent side slip and sides at the seat. When cornering they will toss you off pretty quick. Nothing like holding on to the sheet while being dragged along the ice at 40 miles per. Great times if you have clear, safe ice. I have to look to find a pic of my bot and try to post it. Fred

Knowing nothing about ice boats, I'm wondering how close to weather you can point with that lanteen type rig compared to a fractional rig. Looks like fun to me, 50 that close to the ground would be a rush for sure.

Yes, this is my first iceboat. I will deffentaly take your suggustions. I basicaly built this from looking at a picture and no mesurements. I cant wait to give it a try.
