For the hobbiest/part time user, Harbor Freight has a 36" brake for around $219. Throw in a 20% off coupon and it's less than $175. Don't think you can even buy the raw materials for that price.

I built one on the end of my welding table, reinforcing the bottom of my 3/8" table with a strip of 3/4" x 4" steel. The bending "arm" is a piece of 4 x 6 angle iron and the blade is a blade from a front end loader.
