I see people throwing out old appliances all the time. So I was thinking of using some old washer, dryer, or stove shell to create a small bench top welding booth.
Would the appliance shell stand up to welding, flame cutting, and flying molten metal grindings? Any other foreseeable problems? Suggestions?
Thanks.

You can make some nice booths with appliance covers and yes, they will hold up to the sparks and slag flying around.
Check out this link with a picture. It is from this board

Wow! Great Idea
Those casings are quite tough for sheet metal. I see those things (washers and dryers) given away for free around here all the time (non working)! I wonder what other good ideas could be thrown around for those casings??? Cool idea, Jonnymag!

Thanks for the link. I thought I remembered seeing something about it, but I wasn't sure where I saw it or how well it worked out.
I live in an apartment/commercial area, so (a) I'm looking for a way to contain the flying debris and arc flashing, and (b) there's a lot of metal in the trash -- bed frames, metal furniture, files cabinets, metal shelving, washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc. About once a month, people pile their junk out on the sidewalks for bulky item trash pick up day. But there must be a lot of stainless steel scroungers around here because even an old stainless trough-style urinal disappeared before the trash pickup.

Be careful with refrigerators, freezers, etc. they have those tanks with freon that must be professionally disconnected & disposed of at a recycling site.
