Okay folks, I'm going to put up a project that I am working on and I hope to get some good feedback. As you can see from my "amazing" diagram attached below that I am attaching a zinc plated steel weld nut (.047 thickness) to 18/0 stainless steel. I will do this using the Millermatic 140 auto and the Miller Flat Spot Weld Nozzle #176237 that's going for about $18 bucks give or take. My question is what kind of wire should I use for this application? Any thoughts, comments, and snide remarks are welcome here.
Again, thanks for the welcome to the Miller Forum.

I would clean the zinc off the weld nut first. I would use just mild steel wire. But thats just me. Why don't you use a SS nut and some SS wire?...Bob

For some reason the company (Stafast) doesn't have ss for the weldnut i'm using. Sure would make it easier though.

I managed to track down a ss weldnut on Friday...actually my wife tracked it down online so we're good to go on that now. Now I will be working on the application method as soon as the weldnut samples arrive. As for the nozzle use goes, I picked that so it will concentrate and limit the heat and material so that the discoloration will be minimized on the ss. I want to maintain a clean result as possible since the product will be used by consumers. I will post up some pics later when the product is completed and on the market.
Thanks!

I'm gonna give it a try both ways (with the nozzle and without it) and compare the results. Hey metalmaster, since you have welded zillions of weldnuts and i have welded zero...what would you recommend for settings (heat and wire speed) for welding ss to weldnuts to 18/0 ss? I have the Millermatic 140 auto. I am also building a jig for the weldnut attachment so I can cruise on through and knock the project out.

I don't know about the heat on a 140 as i never used one. I worked in a sheetmetal shop and we attached weld nuts and other same looking fasteners on 1/8" ss plate. But i do agree for a jig so you get them in the right place...Bob
