i still get a laugh when i see people staring at someone welding. maybe the sign should say "dont watch the bright blue light" i dont know if some people will know what an arc is. nice rig though are you on your own?

Nope, not out on my own yet. Where I work compensates me too well to go out on my own, and I'm busy averaging 65 hours a week. It's very hard to walk away from that.

Someday? Maybe.....

Mainly I'm putting this rig together because I'm tired of passing up extra income because I'm not mobile.

Just curious as to why.

I have a Speedaire on the Humvee at work with the Honda and I wasn't overly impressed. Coldblooded, loud, and the starter "CLANGS" into the flywheel upon startup.

Overall I'm much more impressed with the Kohler powered IR.

Got my air compressor mounted. 13 HP Kohler, electric start, 30 gallons at 175 PSI, 25 CFM 100% continuous duty.

Got a great deal on it at Tractor Supply of all places.





Next up are cable reels which should be here next week, and Monday I'm gonna head down to the LWS and order my wire feeder, freek box, aluminum spool gun and some miscellaneous cables.

Nice rig, but that tongue doesnt look very strong, especially for the length. But it looks alot cleaner/neater then my trailer....

The tongue extends almost half way into the trailer for it's overall length and is tied in well. The tongue and cross supports are all welded to the diamond plate skin. I'll look for pictures of the bare frame.

Even so, the tongue only has to support tongue weight.

My tongue weight is 200 lbs, which I plan to reduce slightly by rearranging my equipment a smidge.

I think 2x2x.250 wall box can support 200 lbs over a 42" span.

I have zero sway or flex up to 65 mph. It tows really nice.



Now consider the yield and tensile of A36.....yield is 36k and tensile is 58-80k depending upon the type/shape used. Even considering very excessive G forces in an accident, say 10 Gs, the tongue will see a 2000 lb load.....

Still think it's weak?

Most crap is WAY overbuilt.

I'm a minimalist that likes clean designs.

And in the unlikely event it ever bends in some horrendous accident, I'll cut it out and replace it with 2x3 or 2x4 .250 wall box tube and call it a day.

I like the honda because it has always started except 1 time when it was below zero.

A friend of mine Vern had the Kohler and in the winter he always had to run a hose off the exhaust of the welder over to the compressor to get it started while mine always started unless like I said it was down around zero.

Alot of it may be personal experience and I've had the best luck with the honda.

Personally, had the been the same price, I might have gone with the Honda. However, given how both of them start and run under my "normal" usage conditions, I would not pay a premium for the Honda.

Below zero? You're hard core. I'm from Chicago but only 4 years in Virginia has made me soft.....I wouldn't even think of welding outside in less than 20*F temperatures. That's a good reason to curl up next to our Dynasty 700 and tig aluminum all day.
