Rust Removal

I'm always looking for an easier way to remove rust and I have tried every product and technic I can find. I have never been really pleased with chemical treatments because they will usually strip more than just the rust. Eastwood has this rust desolver that they claim will only remove the rust. It looked interesting but I had my doughts. It was only $14 for a gallon so I thought I take the gamble and give it try. At the time I purchased it, I was restoring a bunch of hardware for project car I was working on. I filled a glass jar full of 45 year old rusty nuts and bolts and poored in the rust desolver. After 24 hours there was a black coating on the bolts, I wiped the bolts with a rage and under black coating was nice clean metal. I then started a small welding project that I was going to use some old rusty 3/8 tubing to construct it with. After cutting down the tubing to their individual sizes that I need I dumped them in the glass jar and pulled them out 8 hours later. Wiped the black coating of buffed with some 320 sand paper and I was ready to go to town with my welding.

Has anyone used this stuff before? So far I'm been getting some great results. Does anyone know what this stuff is made of? It has a wierd smell, looks like brake fluid, but doesn't seem to have any acides in it.

I use plain old Muratic Acid, 3 bucks at the hardware store. It removes rust, gun bluing, galvanised coatings, zinc coatings. I just pour some into a plastic can or bucket and put the parts in for about 5 minutes or so. It smokes and stinks so wear googles and rubber gloves. After you are happy with whatever you just removed rinse the parts in HOT water and some TSP cleaner to stop the acid eating. I dry well and coat with some wd-40 if its going to sit a while like my bolts i remove the zinc from. Then if i am not going to use what is in the bucket i pour the used TSP nuetralizer in and some more water to dilute it and dump it out. Most of the time i save the acid and use it over...Bob

TSP ??? My son uses Muratic acid to clean pools but not sure what the TSP is. It really does a job on nasty pools

How much TSP cleaner or what ratio do you use in the hot water and how long do you leave it in?

If i use about 10 oz of muratic acid for the rusty parts i usually use about a 1/8 cup of TSP and a gallon jug of HOT water to neutralize the parts. The HOT water evaporates quicker and saves some drying time...Bob

Sorry for the confusion. It was about half past midnight when I down loaded those pics and I was to tired to link that pic up with this thread. I guess since you saw the pics the link on my other thread finally worked.
