You can look at a bolt a quickly tell if its domestic or metric thread...AND... if the pitch is course or standard. OK, and yes in those rare instances mention you may have to get a thread guage out because its either very fine or a machined thread. (been a mechanic for over 30 years, everything from doing VW Air Cooled motors to Turbocharger Conversions on Ferrari's)
