sounds like a cool father son project. seems like there are several levels of cart to build, what level are you looking for?? closer to VW or go cart??
there are some nice sites out there for small sand rails but they are a bit high $$
i was looking at building one a wile back but the plans price was too much for me.

helped my cousin build his VW rail it is a normal rail it could be 4 seater I`ll post some pics if i got some
