I have a 2 1/2 length of railroad track. I'd like to fabricate a stand out of square tubing I have. The track makes an excellent anvil and forming tool. Any ideas on this? (I'm suffering from CRS this morning)

Any good anvil needs a stout solid base. My small anvil sits on a post set in about 200lb of concrete and its still not solid enough sometimes. I want it "portable" so I can move it around the shop for storage and bolting it to the floor wasn't practical. The big anvil will eventually go outside when the drive gets done. It will not be moveable with out a lift. I plan on a block weighing 1000lb. 2'x2'x2' soild concrete for my 200lb anvil.

I have seen a few anvils mounted on a piece of tree trunk, Nice and stout. Still somewhat portable. The wood will give just enough "bounce".

What size is the tubing?

An anvil base needs to be strong and stable. If your tubing is large enough (4" or bigger) you could probably get away with a base and top made from heavy plate (1/2" or better). I'd consider filling the tube with as much weight as you can stuff in it before welding on the top plate.

Nice looking, laugh if you want( and I'm sure you do), but a large chunck of wood was very common to mount anvils on, when it was more common to have anvils.
