ok i picked up the welder from skid steer steve but am having problems with the starter engaging (as what he said in the description). its a engine driven 225 if u didnt read the post and made before 1973 with a onan engine. ive checked out most of the wiring and redone some along with replacing a bad starter solinoid. i havent been able to get anything out of the starter so had to pull apart the generator case and as far as i know from the past doubles as the sarter and am going to try to clean the shaft but am stumpted . ive had my brother help me with checking the shaft which i dont know the proper name to and seems to not be shorted. does anyone know of a lincoln message board i could ask about this on or a wiring diagram its model # is 5574. sorry for the long post any help is appreciated

I'm not familair with that welder but does the starter spin? Or does this type of welder use the generator to crank it over. We use to have some old Onan generators that were that way and they cranked real funny. You would have to hold the switch in crank for a few seconds then they would start to crank. I like real starters betterScott

no the generater turns it over. weve tried holding the starter button down but still no result. i like the setup but when it doesnt work its annoying cause i know nothin about em. really the starter is what generates the power but im not sure cause most dc motors will generate power if u spin them. the brushes are really in good shape better than i expected. ive tried to clean up the shaft and hopfully that will help but i dont know.welding...its awsome

you might also try the hobart board. lots of red stuff there too.

I hate them like that. Next advice would be to use a test light, or volt meter and trace the current path from the solonoid down to the generator. Also removing the spark plugs will make it easier to turn over while your testing it. Here is a couple of sites that might help you as it would take me forever to explain how it works, Or at least how a starter/generator works which I assume is very simliar to your welder. a picture is worth a thousand words, These are not from welders but most things in eletrical systems are relavent to each other. Maybe these will give you an idea, hope they help.
