Education is the key with all trades, the more you learn the better you'll be. Some guys want to learn and want to continue to improve while some guys don't. We had a young guy at work that just started migging aluminum about 3 months ago, he'd been having problems and our incompetant foreman hasn't been able to help him. I happened to use his machine (Invision™ 350 MPa) or I should say tried to use his machine last week only to discover something was terribly wrong. Flipped the panel open and to my horror he's been welding with a steel program! Pushed a couple of buttons and no more problems for anyone!
Hmm maybe I should ask for a raise... saved hiring Ed to fix our problems!
That's funny. Without shop class in local schools anymore it's only gonna get worse. New school machines and old school weldors

    Default No question, he's legit.

I have been in the welding industry for forty years and I have been loosely associated with Ed for almost 20. I think you may be taking things a little too personally when you say that, "he paints all of us weld guys as fools."
Twenty years ago I was looking for an answer to the question, "Why do so many of the weld techs I meet know nothing about welding?" Ed's book explained things very clearly and it made sense. No management team wants to hire an "all talk...no arc, self proclaimed weld master"(and there is more of them out there than should be.) But corporate management are in a catch 22 situation. They need the welding process expertise but they know nothing about it. They put their trust and faith in someone who looks the part and sounds like they know what they are talking about. All too late they realize that the welding problems are increasing, not decreasing, because their "weld guy" learnt everything he knows from a high school and the back of a lincoln electric "How to weld Guide."
I am reasonably soft spoken, weld technologist with three post graduate degrees. If I had a dollar for everytime I listened to some brainless weld tech spout off about a process he knows nothing about, I could retire tomorrow. There are a number of excellent, really dedicated, knowledgeable welding professionals in this industry. You just have to wade through the throngs of guys that learnt everything they have from their weld supply salesman.
Ed is a little dated, a little repetitive, but the core of what he has to say is as true today as it was twenty years ago. As long as you are selective and temper his theories with what you know and trust, he is at the very least worth the read.

Well with all of your ed craig like greatness you've just described, and your 3 post graduate degrees, the best you can do is to dredge up and reply to a 7 year old thread on a Miller hobby type welding forum???

    Spectacular, simply spectacular.

As you see, Rockwell, this forum, like many a long-established forum on any topic, has its self-appointed-resident-experts/arguement-leaders/opinion-arbiters/arrogant blowhards, and they don't like it when a newbie comes in threatening to steal their thunder with what others might regard as an opinion worth hearing. You might even think that when someone like you posts to an old thread in which they, the big boys on the thread, have lost interest, they could just move along to something that does interest them. But no, evidently they feel compelled to read everything and to sneer at whatever meets their holy disapproval . . . .

My now deceased friend was six years old when they figured out he was totally deaf and nearly blind. Medical experts were able to get him enough vision to drive, and hearing to, with effort, carry on a conversation. Still he "marched to the beat of a different drummer."
