Very cool that you tell your stories that we can learn from! Us beginners (in welding and trying to start our own business) like me, are REALLY happy there are honest people out there besides ourselves! I had FINALLY finished that "simple" gate last week, should have took me 2 days if I had your experience, took me 7 (lots of grinding!) . Even though I was fustrated with it, I did my best, put 2 coats of expensive primer on and 2 coats of color (black). I know overkill, but I wanted to do a good job...1st real job, next gate will be no more than 4 days, next one.....

What if you get a super elaborit gate job next? Huh? then it mite take more than 4 days.

i think estimating work time is about the hardest part when starting out and probly still a bit tricky after you been at it for a wile. seems like there is always some thing to pop up and bite you in the bunzzz. even after almost 20 years building houses i still got caught with my pants down so to speak on ocation, but a lot less then when i first started.
now i'm starting all over with steel and a bad back so i almost always get it wrong. good thing i'm just doing it for fun and the ocational $$ for suplies. but i hope to change that soon and i better get a closer estamet soon.

Seeing that you are relatively new to the sport of welding, let me assure you of one thing. Myself and most of the other people on this site are not the experts you think we are, we are just like you and learn something new everyday. Anyone who claims to know it all and be able to do it all is full of b*llsh*t.You say your simple gate should have taken 2 days but took you 7 to complete, well with the knowledge you gained with this one, the next one will be quicker and easier. Don't be down on yourself because you think it should have been done sooner, yes we may have done it quicker, but you have created something most others (non welders) don't have the ability to do. It takes time to learn the shortcuts, the math, and the general principles, but the experience is worth the wait. Dave

Gonna play with my 200dx I got almost 2 weeks ago. Didn't buy any tig setup yet, but I need to practice my stick for work.

ha ha!! you are old dude, my wife always say's she would be happy if she could just get me to act anything over 4.
something about blowing rasberrys at her with my 2 year old when she is trying to yell at us for trashing the house wile she was at work, i mean realy what were we suposed to do ?? sit on the couch and watch TV or read a book ?? heck she's the one that left us here all alown in the first place, she should have known better. i mean realy , the nerve of some people.

congrats on the 200DX, great lil welder. TIG is a lot of fun once you get passed the cussing stage and start to get it.

well put. and every thing gets easyer with time, especily if you lern as you go.
i'm what ya call one of them jack of all trades, master of none kinda guys, or some thing like that. LOL

I, like you consider myself to be a jack of all trades and master of none. I am the type of guy that has always gotten my hands into any of the aspects of the job to get it done. I spent 12 1/2 years in the citrus and vegetable processing industry building and installing all types of automated machinery, and have been very fortunate to have been able to travel all over north and south America and a few of the islands off of our coast. I don't really call myself a weldor as much as I call myself a fabricator, but in the world of progress and deadlines we didn't always have the luxury of having the carpenters there to build the control rooms, or the electricians not there to hook up a piece of equipment for us, etc... etc... etc... Not being one to stand around and wait we took it upon ourselves to do what we thought needed to be done. I am by no means an expert in any of these fields but at least I have the confidance that I can do it if needed. It's great having the feeling of knowledge, and the ability to do things that most others are not able or willing to try. I would personally take one jack of all trades over ten experts in a given profession. Dave
