Is anybody using the MM251 off of a generator. I need to weld 1/4 aluminum plate. This on a deck of a boat. This is a one time job. I have a 12.9kw gen for this. I need to know as I have not bought the MM251 yet. Is there a different Mig welder that would work if the 251 does not.

KKM, you should have plenty of juice with a 12K generator,the 251 manual calls for 42 amps at 230V so that should work out to around 7.5 KW . My manual on the MM 250 says 7.7 KW but is requires 44 amps at 230. Hope this helps,Paul

I don't think power is the issue. The MM251 is loaded with electronics and is likely to be very picky about clean generator power.

How clean the power needs to be is what I am worred about. Is there anybody out there using a 251 on a generator?

you may want to just contact Miller engineering directly to get some specifics of input power quality requirements. They know that stuff inside and out and what it will tolerate and what will send it down the road. I know some of their gear is specifically designed to run on poor input power, but I don't know about the 251. Just from personal experience, I see so many people that over look the earth ground bonding for generators. This is a quick way to get rouge power crawling around your gear and making it act up or worse, burn up. SSS

He mentioned concern for the various electronic circuits found in the 251 that were not in the 210.
