  • Repair salt corroded Kubota FEL boom

    Just bought a 2002 Kubota L48.
Started going through normal pm and found salt had corroded through the side walls on right fel boom.
    Applied needle scaler to evaluate.
Looks like salt settled on top of the weld that holds the heel to the bottom of the boom just below the front bucket bracket.
Can I cut out the rotted material and weld a patch?
What would be the best material to use?

It's probably just mild steel. Prep the repair area and handle it is my vote...provided you have the equipment to do so.

...ummhh...how about checking the boom material actually used--with mfg., etc.?
It's not unusual that HSLA steels or higher strength steels are used in boom construction.
