  • Mig gun liner

    I've been noticing that when my mig gun line has a loop or coiled in it the wire feed is not constant and smooth. The gun is older and has seen lots of use. Does the group think the liner needs to be replaced or could it be something else involving the wire feed. When I say it has a coil in it, I mean the line will sometimes coil around and lay on itself when I'm welding. I don't always have the Mig gun line completely pulled straight before welding.

    That would be a good place to start, it might have a small kink in it. You might want to tighten down the drive rolls a smidge also...Bob

      One of the biggest problems with wire feed binding is dirt in the liner.

      Before you go out and buy a new liner, take your current liner out and soak it in some acetone for a day then blow the liner out with compressed air. Sometimes you may have to do this a few times to get all the crud out of it.

      I dont recommend this for a teflon liner as I would think the acetone might melt the teflon but for a normal coiled steel liner this works very well.

      Always make sure to put the felt wiper back on the wire when changing an empty roll out.

        I was once told to run a slightly oversize liner on Miller torches. The rep said it would not effect the feed but stopped the binding.
        I don't know if this is fact or not.

          mig liner

          I think I've heard the current can swell the wire making it "sticky" in the liner. This could be bullcrap.
          My own feeling is that coils, or bends make smooth feeding difficult. Have you ever tried pulling electrical wire through conduit? The radius diameter AND number of bends makes it much more difficult.

            I replaced the liner and the gun runs smooth and without hesitation. I didn't notice any kinks in the line, but did notice some rusty areas ???????

              I agree with you..when pulling wire you can tell a big difference in pulling a straight run and one that has bends in it..I'm new to MIG but common sense tells me to keep the cable as straight as a I can within reason. i wonder how huch the diameter of the wire varies? I bought some .039 bernard tips for my .035 wire thinking maybe the wire had some oversized spots in it..i may be wrong...but i got my doubts the foreign wire standards or inspectors our as strict as ours would be..I'll bet DAN could tell us more about this.

                I just had similar problems w/ my 350P. But it also would sputter alot at starts and during the weld. I was told to pull the liner and look for kinks. If no kinks in liner then while you have it out use your luber cleaner and pour it in one end and miraculously junk came out. Also check your rollers for wear. If they are worn out and you keep tightening pressure on them your not doing anything.
