  • How about a Oil Drumb BBQ

    First let me tell you about myself. I am a 23 year old male in the state of Indiana. I just started MIG welding professionally two weeks ago. My sisters boyfriend and I have gotten two 55 gallon oil drums from his workplace. So far we have cut them in half and burned all the excess oil out. We have looked on the internet for plans that somebody might have posted for ideas but we failed to find any. If anyone has any photos or plans we can use as a reference it would be greatly apperciated

    lincoln has good directions for a drum pit that is really easy to make.

      How'd you cut them in half? What was the exact product in these "oil drums," out of curiosity?

        dont use that lincoln plan it sucks!! The best way to make them is two cut them directly in half. Then take 1 inch angle and make a frame to line the rim on the top and the bottom half, this will make the halves a lot more sturdy and give something to attach hinges and the front handle too. Then you can either built a frame and drop the bottom half the drum inside. or you can use the angle you used to line the bottom half as the top of the frame this saves you about 10 ft. of angle. check out the Pic. you can also put selves on the front or side mabye a bottom self out of expanded metal. ill post some picture of ones ive built later.

          If you cut your barrel directly in half, you will lose all your heat every time you open the door. Quarter the barrel. The smoke and heat rotate around the circumference creating a oven like effect. I made mine almost directly from the lincoln project. Sometimes you just need to be willing to modify what you don't like. Like to add some pics, but they won't shrink enough.

            These drums take about 30 secounds to heat back up. And the angle around the drum seals the heat in it also makes it alot easier to remove the coals and clean it out.

              my boss paid extra to have a guy put concerete in the bottom of the one he bought for $300 ( he got the shaft )

                What I did on mine was to put a trap door on the bottom so I could sweep out the coals. It's obviously a personal choice thing. Whatever you want to build for you, is the right way.

                  For various ideas check out some of the following sites (www.gatorpits.net, www.tejassmokers.com, and www.batespits.com). I make my pits out of rolled plate stock (3/16th or 1/4"). They make great pits and will last forever. Plus the retain more heat.
