  • Opinions on Helmets,,,Insurance

Hey guys, I am wanting to upgrade my helmet. I have an auto-darkening already but I still get flashed occasionally at low amps while tigging. IOC has a Hornell Speedglas and the Miller Elite. I just wanted to get some opinions from you guys. Also, I am not having any luck at all finding someone to insure me for my business. They consider it too high of a risk. I was wondering what some of you small independent guys do for insurance. Thanks, Adam

I have the Miller Elite and just replaced it with something else. I did not like the curved front lens and the green arc. The curved front lens creates glare it looks like there are 2 arcs sometimes. I was not pleased with the optics since day one. I will admit it is a tough one. It's been dropped, thrown, kicked, and the lens started to melt from the heat from a big aluminum job I did. I have been using the Jackson NextGen EQC for a few weeks and love it. It has not flickered yet. Sorry Miller about the helmet, but all my machines are Millers.

Insurance? Good luck and get ready to pay up!

        Speedglas

I have a Speedglas (3/10) myself and I love it. The only trouble I have is if somebody is running equipment with a flashing yellow light on it, then my helmet acts like a disco light, trys to get in beat with the light. I never used it outside yet so I cannot report on that.

I used a speedglass back in 1992 for a bunch of years. I came with the tigerhood and it was great.

After the miller I almost tried the speedglass but the rounded lens cover worried me. It's a lot of money to spend and not like it.

Hey Jet, want a miller? You pay shipping! If you don't like it send it back. It needs a battery.

I have used Miller and Hobart autoadjusting welding headgears, and liked them both. I recently purchased a Speedglas 9002x Flexview, and I love it. When I weld ouside in the sunlight, I do have to adjust the sensitivity to prevent premature autoadjusting.

I've had a Nex-Gen for close to four years now and like it just as much now as the day I got it. Actually more, because I put it in a new Halo-X hood and it's a lot lighter than my old Shadow hood. Has an auto, weld, grind and cut mode so it is a very versatile lens and more adjustment than a Speedglas for sensitivity and delay. Also has four sensors so very, very rarely blinks. I highly recommend it, you won't be disapointed.

                    hoods

I have a miller and a jackson. Out of the two I like the miller elite because it is a lot lighter. i just get the miller about three weeks ago and it so find on here. So if you have the time you can get a good one for about half of a new one.

The halo X hood is really nice and the jackson hood is the way to go I think. I stared welding alot about a year ago when I went to get a new hood my local supplier had this to say ( the best (jackson) you only have one pair if eyes are you willing to chance injory) and they sold me several blue welders in the past and will again if I ever need one

                            jackson

i know a few guys that weld for a living and they all swear by the jackson hoods and lenses. my welding instructor who has a bunch of aws certs said jackson is what he reccomends to all his students. some hoods might be flashy and cool looking but the jacksons do one thing right protect your eyes.

i use the miller elite and in my opinion, it is a very good hood. i have not had any problems with tig and the lens giving me any flash at low or high amperage. it is lighter than the nex gen, and for me that was one of the great selling points, being that i usually have to wear it for 10 hours straight 6 days a week, and that don't include any side work that i do. as for insurance, best thing i can say is to start calling and be prepared to pay alot out, it aint easy or cheap following the rules.
