  • Small wheel project.

    Today while going on a call out, which was right across the street from a
    garage sale. I found 2 21x11x8 lug tread tires for a 4 wheeler or mower.
    At 15 bucks I grabbed them. The tires alone are well worth the 15 bucks.
    My plan is to cut out and weld in a new center with the correct offset to fit
    my zero turn mower. I plan to use the old bolt holes to help line up the
    new plate, When finished welding the back side I can trim out enough of
    the old bolt pattern to allow room for access to the new lug nuts.
    First is the tires and wheels of course.
    Second is the wheel center close up.
    And third is the new center set in the wheel for the pic, not squared or
    centered yet by any means.

    I plan to tack it well, then I am not sure which is better. If I should make
    four 2" welds spaced evenly, or if it should be welded all the way around?
    My first thought was that it did not need the full weld, but thats why I am
    asking for thoughts. We have a scale breaking top speed of 6 mph but I
    would still rather not have it fail.

    My plate is 1/4" with not more then 1/8" fit-up gap. I won't know the wheel
    thickness until i get the tire off tomorrow afternoon but I cant imagine it
    being more then 3/16".

    I figured I would use .030 with my 211 using c-25.

    My last question would be, should the welds be at the lug holes or
    between them? I'm probably over thinking this but I would like to do it once
    right and not mess with it ever again.

    Just in case anyone wonders, the only reason I am messing with this is so
    I can have a tire and wheel for those nice afternoons when I'm almost
    done mowing and manage to loose a tire.

    I finally made a bit of progress tonight. The wife made it really tough to find time to work on my toys. She did a little horse trading which required me to go load up a 4 piece oak bedroom set and haul it home. WOW! It sure is nice but d@mn I hope I never have to move it again.

    Then had a buddy show up needing a u-joint pressed out. Just a few minutes in the press and a little heat to melt the plastic retainer in the factory joint and it was out. A little clean up and the new one was in, he said Wow that press sure makes it easy. Who knows how long he would have been at it with a c-clamp or a vise. It was just a little tough since it was the joint right below where the cab meets the bed and road salt falls and lays on the drive shaft.

    Today the mower broke on the second yard of five. Of course I had taken my tools out of the truck.

    Last night I tried to break the bead on my tires. With no success at all, while I was at HF getting low cost tools, I picked up the small tire changing tool.

    I have never had trouble like I did with these tires and wheels. This little gem saved the day. I figure just what I used it tonight saved me 20 bucks already.

    I made spacers and welded the plate in 4 spots opposite the lug holes. Then I dropped a large bolt thru the center of the drill press table to clamp the wheel, and drilled over sized holes to allow the socket and lug nut fit nicely. I have the second wheel broke down and ready to weld in tomorrow night. After it cooled I connected my welds to make it a continuous bead. I really need to work on my tie in's. They aren't the greatest looking welds but I believe they will hold.

      Looks pretty good, nice idea to adapt somethin to work.

      ...and yeah, those small tires can be a real pain. When I worked as a mechanic, we had em a few times, tried em on a machine, and tore em up pretty good. We ended up doing em all by hand with tire bars, and lots of tire soap

        Well my boss surprised me last week and I had to run down south for the last 4 days of the week. So I didn't get to work on my other wheel until today. Got it welded up and cut back out, got the tire back on, the right direction even, got them mounted on the mower and took it for a test.

        These tires are crazy great for poor traction locations, now I must control my self on the wild turns. Yes they will tear the heck out of the yard but its a 2 for 2 trade off. I have 2 nice yards and 2 swamps, it trades out nicely.

        I know it isn't much of a project but they want a pretty penny for new tires and wheels. So far I have the 15 bucks I paid for them and the 50 dollars I spent on the tire changer. I'm still under what it cost for one tire.

            I took it to my other 4 yards today. I was told that we have had 3+ inch's of rain since last Thursday. All I can say is these tires is all I will use from now on. My worst spot is near 30' by 50' and with a little care with the controls I never spun a tire, thus no mess and the grass is cut. Even in the normally dry yards there is a few places I would spin but now I can back right up with no worries.

            Thanks for looking everyone. I probably wouldn't have posted this today but I just can't recommend these tires enough if you have hills of soft spots to mow.
