  • Ornamental Gate Job

This is the gate job with side panels which I put on here about a week ago waiting for the lady to approve the scrolls on top of the gate section. She approved the gate and I installed it today. She loved it and so did her Labradoodle which thought it was extremely COOL to be let out of the house without a leash and run amuck in the courtyard.
I primed the gate and side panels and she wants to paint it herself. At first, she thought maybe black. The trim on her house is brown and close to the color of the primer so now she is thinking she may paint it some shade of brown to match the house trim.

Nice Looking Design! I usually don't see the pickets extending below the bottom rail which begs the question: What did you use for the bottom rail (and top rail for that matter), a pre-punched piece of iron?

The three horizontal channels are 1" x1/2". I punch my own channels with a Hyd/Elec press I made in the past. Prepunched is ok if you have no other way. I always evenly space my pickets in every panel so prepunched channel won't work for me.

Thank all for the nice words...
The scrolls are hand made using a propane forge, an anvil, and a big hammer.
I made my own barrel hinges using 1" cr round, 1/2" cr pins and the shiney part of the hinge is bronze bearing I made on the lathe. The gate is very quiet when being opened as it should stay.

                            Hi Monte

Very nice job on the gate. I have two grills in the works so I will have to figure out how to post photos.
I was wondering about the punch you mentioned. Is this is a commericial product? If so can you provide the source and a photo of the setup?
If shop made a few pointers on how it was made?
                            Thanks!
