I was just wondering if any of the welding instructors out there had any memorable stories to pass on.

I teach basic and advanced welding as well as CADD. The first day of gas welding is always a favorite. Lots of torches popping!

Everyday is an adventure, welding jackets on fire, guys pointing at their weld with a live electrode in the stinger and giving me a flash as I am examining their weld. but my favorite part is at the begining of the first day when most of the students cant even strike an arc, then fast forward to about 12 or 13 weeks later, they are welding pipe and getting nice looking welds with acceptable bend tests. thats the best part. its really fun to watch them progress thru the ups and downs and learn a difficult skill.
best job I ever had. I had a guy make a 6" pipe weld in the 6G position 6010 root/7018 remainder on the wrong polarity,I asked him a couple of times if he noticed anything weird about how his weld was going, he didnt notice a thing. I just let him go to see what would happen. I'll be darned the side bends all passed. Also the days when we learn how to use the cutting torch are probably the craziest, sometimes the smell of singed hair or burnt pant legs fills the air. LOL
