  • What's the "Arc control" switch do?

    One of our Synchrowave 250's has an "Arc control" switch. Can anyone tell me what the science is behind this switch? What is it doing to control the arc? Also, does this switch control arc in both AC and DC modes? When should it be used? Thank you in advance.

    Are you refering to the Balance/Dig control?

    In SMAW, this changes the inductance of the welding circuit, allowing a more forceful, digging arc for rods like 6010 or a softer arc for smoother 7018s.

    In AC GTAW, it acts as a balance control for DCEN/DCEP, within the capabilities of the power source, 32% DCEP - 55% DCEP for this model, for controlling the cleaning action when welding aluminum and magnesium. You can also use it to restabilize the arc from rectifying under high-amperage or helium conditions.

      Thanks Mac, but no, this is just a toggle switch....Arc control on/off...I'm up to speed on the balance/dig control. Thanks for the online manual resource.

        Okay, from an older model. Here's the excerpt from your manual:

        1 Arc Control (Dig)
        For AC And DC SMAW Welding
        When set at 0, short-circuit amperage
        at low arc voltage is the same
        as normal welding amperage.
        When setting is increased, shortcircuit
        amperage at low arc voltage
        increases.
        Set at 0 for GTAW welding.

        2 Arc Control Switch
        Place switch in the ON position to
        turn on arc control circuitry. When
        switch is in the OFF position, no additional
        amperage is available at
        low arc voltages. Place switch in
        the OFF position while performing
        Gas Tungsten Arc Welding
        (GTAW).

        Application:
        Control helps arc starting or making
        vertical or overhead welds by increasing
        amperage at low arc voltage,
        and reduces electrode sticking
        while welding.

          I have tried it and it does not seem to make much difference to me. should be off for tig welding.
