  • Generator: 50 hz convert to 60 hz?

Found a NOS 2004 Honda EX5500 generator at a steal of a price--but it's 50 Hz. I assume it is a 2-pole generator, so it must run at 3,000 RPM to generate 50 Hz. Anyone have any knowledge of these units? Is it as simple as raising RPM TO 3600 and turning down the front panel voltage adjust knob? Would it have enough adjustment range? Or maybe have to change the voltage regulator? I have never even seen a 50 hz generator before. Any help greatly appreciated.

we had to restrap the gensets when we moved them from Iraq to Afghanistan...army wanted 240 50hz in Iraq and 120 60hz in Afghanistan....we could adjust rpm from 1500 to 1800(diesels) to bring the hertz up but the correct fix was restrapping...not sure if that Honda can be done?...we had fg Wilson, cummins, and a whole mess of different makes....I have a large collection of service manuals for about every genset made I acquired over the years on my hard drive..i'll look up the Honda and see if theres anything in there for ya

Thanks! Appreciate the response. I missed the deal-someone who apparent knew the answer beat me to it. However, still an interesting question I'd like to know more about.

sorry my Honda manual only shows a 60hz....European power grid is 50hz...maybe a Honda source in that part of the world would have an answer?

Thanks very much for the responses. My guess is the restrapping electrically adds or deletes some turns in the windings to adjust voltage output to compensate for the different engine speeds required to get the proper frequency. Makes sense.

Wonder which model it was as they had the 120v/240v 60hz and then a 115v/230v 50hz & 240v only 50hz

It said EX5500 but that is 60 Hz---unless you go to the UK website and there the same model is 50 hz. You would think they would change a digit or something.

They had an A B C designation after the EX5500

but its been over 20 years since I've even thought of the 5500. They were the workhorse little generators for motion picture and photo shoots on location since they had AVR.

the EU inverter series pretty much killed off the 5500 use.

Thanks. That makes sense. And pretty logical that something from 2004 might not have the most current info on the internet.
