  • question about stick welder amps

the question I have is about the amps. I asked about stick welding 1/2 mild steel before and everyone said to use 250 amps (for single pass). So I know this probably basic info, but could I use a 200a machine and just do multiple pass. I have access to a 200a machine. I don't need to weld that thick but 1 or 2 times a year, so if I don't HAVE to buy a 250a I would wait to buy it.
    Thanks Dean

Unless your working on a skyscraper you should be fine with 1/8 7018 between 125&130amp dcrp, depending on your skill level.

200 amps is lots for anything but gouging. Just multipass it

Not sure why anyone would want to attempt welding 1/2" steel in a single pass.
Multi pass is the way to go. If you require a full 1/2" weld, 5/32" rod will make quick work of it.
