  • 200 DX Can't DCEN Stick ??

    Owner's Manual:
    =================
    1 Polarity Control - Press switch pad until desired LED is illuminated.

    DC - Machine is set to DCEN (direct current electrode negative) for TIG welding, and to DCEP (direct current electrode positive) for Stick welding.

    AC - Use AC (alternating current) for TIG and Stick welding.
    =================================

    Is this machine not capable of DCEN Stick? Maybe I'm reading something wrong or is it ok to swap the cable connections??

    Sorry, just not finding documentation that states this and I don't want to swap the cables and blow the thing up. :-)

    How would it know you swapped the leads?

        Just out of curiosity, what are you doing that you'd even WANT straight polarity on stick??!? Steve

          I just got this machine and doing my homework reading the manuals and figuring out what it can and cannot do before firing it up.

          My curiosity must be satisfied. :-)

          Also it seems that most machines (while few) I've owned or worked with had either a DCEN selector or tap mod AND the 200 DX will do DCEN Tig I just 'assumed' it would probably do DCEN Stick.

          Hopefully this thread will result in an authoritative "yes it will" or "no it won't".

            Many moons ago whilst out in the boonies and needing to cut something, like corrugated culvert for example, I'd swap the leads on the AEAD, max the amps, and hit it with 6010. It did the job.

            2 cordless hammers

            1 cordless chisel
            2 cordless screwdrivers, 1 + and 1 -
            and a cordless adjustable wrench that also doubles as a hammer.....

              Good point - it's been a LOOOONG time since I'd needed to do that, had A/O torches since the '70's and a Hypertherm plaz for the last couple years, guess I'm gettin' spoiled Steve

                Oh, unless you just wanna spend a lot more $$$ on tungstens AND lose maybe 90% of your capability, there's also a reason why your tig is DCEN - check out the link to the "tungsten book" in one of 80N's recent posts for more... Steve

                  Amazing how easy it is to get an opinion but not an answer. :-)

                  I wrote Miller tech. When I hear back Monday I'll post the answer here.

                  Asking them is probably a better approach going forward anyway.

                        Use the advanced polarity control feature. (APC = A Plug Change).

                          Appears my first "guess" was correct. Just took asking in the right place to get an authoritative answer. :-)

                          Direct from Miller:
                          ===================
                          It is possible to stick weld DCEN on the 200DX, you will just have to swap the work lead and stinger on the front of the machine. When set up in stick mode with the stinger and work lead according to the book you will be in DCEP, swapping the leads will switch your polarity.

                            Additionally from Miller:
                            =====================

                            The 200 DX will A/C stick as well.

                            Note: I don't care if anyone wants to A/C or not. :-)

                              Straight polarity on stick

                              My question exactly! I'm no expert-but as the new owner of a Dynasty 200-why does he want to do that? I am not being sarcastic-just want more info. I was taught that straight polarity was for shallow penetration. Why not use the tig for that ?
