new syncrowave 210?

    Seems like if inverters were so much more cost-effective than transformers, power companies would be putting them on telephone poles instead of transformers...how many trillion dollars could they save with reduced waste and reduced need for more capacity?

      That's an excellent question. I've wondered about that ever since I heard about inverters. My quess as to an answer is that at some point, the utility companies will be moving in that direction.

      One good thing about transformers is that they are very durable. They also do well under widely varying temperature conditions and, best of all, there are no discrete components or circuit boards to fail.

      This is not to say that inverters are not reliable, it's just that perhaps they haven't built them on the scale that is needed to step down the very high voltages that are carried on transmission lines. I do think it would ultimately save a lot of money in the future.

      As to converting to solid state components, nearly all of the traffic lights in the US have already been converted to light-emitting diodes. That's saving an enormous amount of electricity. The typical LED consumes only 30 milliamps in comparison to light bulbs that use far more. Even in large arrays of 100 or more LED's, the total consumption would be around 0.3 amps. That's probably one tenth of what a light bulb in a street light would consume. LED's have very long lives as well.

      So, it's probably only a matter of time until inverters replace some of the large transformers that you see on the typical pole outside of your house.

      I would love to own a Dynasty because I'm aware of the advantages, particularly on welding of aluminum and other more exotic metals, I just wish that they weren't so expensive.

        You cannot stop the march of time... and technology...

        When welders with individual transformer taps were getting replaced with moveable core machines...

        There were protests...

        When moveable core machines were getting superseded by magnetic amplifier machines..

        There were protests..

        When Magnetic amplifier machines were getting replaced by SCR chopper square wave machines..

        There were protests....

        And now that choppers are being overtaken by inverters..???

        You guessed it.... people resist change and the unknown... to no avail..

          AC power transmission is by far the most economical way to supply power over long distances. This was settled between Edison and Tesla many years ago. Generating AC or DC is really no different in cost but transformers by far handle the very high AC voltages more economically than an inverter based unit that would be used in transmission lines.

            Ummmm....

            Dont get it. Kinda Aerowave-ish, Edsel-ish.

            Why would I want a 130# inverter with dual voltage for tig?

            Either a big reliable tranny or a small, compact, light inverter.

            Not sure where it fits. Kinda looks like it will be a ba$tard machine someday.

              Cost vs. price

              I have thought for years that the very large premium for inverter welders was not justified by cost differences. Note that some companies are offering inverter welders for price parity with transformer machines.

              I am happy with my Syncrowave 200, but I can see the advantage of less current draw, and smaller size and weight, without doing a more detailed feature comparison.

              But the introduction of the Syncrowave 210 may lower resale values of the Syncrowave 200 and 180, supporting my frequently expressed opinion that the best value for a basic TIG welder is a used Syncrowave 180 or 200.

                Got a chance to run it tonight.Pretty straight forward controls.Unlike my SW250 you do not hear the hi freq it just lights off and you're on your way,lift arc is nice too.
                The odd thing(to me) is the fan constantly turns on and off,don't remember this from the Dynasty I have run.
                On AC in lift arc the arc dropped out twice......not sure if it was me or the machine.I lit the arc and 3/4 the way to having a puddle and the arc went out like I let off the pedal when I did not.
                Gonna run some stick tomorrow and try it out on 120V just to see what it does.

                  source provides full welding output from
                  230 V while drawing less than 30 amps."

                  If a DX200 weighs 45 lbs, why does the 210 weigh 133 lbs?

                    My old syncro took another crap, second time in six months. My electrician friend swears it's due to cutting back on the grids, and it's reaking havoc on machines, appliances, and equipment. I was all set to buy another tranny and said screw it and bought one of these yesterday. LWS said it should be here wendsday.

                      The 210 has the cart build in. Add the cart to the Dynasty and you get closer. As you see they build the 210 into a MillerMatic chassis.

                        Well thank ya! Then this model fills that chasm that exists between the Diversion and Dynasty series. The 210 has a nice feature set. I'm not quite ready yet as my oxy class starts in a couple of weeks with TIG the following semester. At that time I may still go for the 200DX, but at least now there is a good second choice in blue.

                          Boy am I glad I just sold my sync 200 a few months ago. I actually got 50$ more than I paid for it brand new from air gas. the 210 sync looks cool, not surprising they went to the inverter base for the power source. I sold the sync 200 for the diversion 180. I was limited by input power in my garage. I am happy as heck with the diversion, I love the inverter arc.

                          Way to go miller, you keep coming up with new(cool) stuff
