    How does a plasma torch behave with a compressed bottle of oxygen for supplied air?

    Not to sure on O2 for field plasma might not be the best idea.

    But i can speak on nitrogen use and compressed air from a portable gas air compressor on my trailer. Both work great i use nitrogen every once in a while when i need it away from my trailers 100' reach of air hose.

      Compressed Air is the most commonly used gas for lower current plasma cutting and works well for most metals from gauge thickness to 1 inch. It leaves an oxidized cut surface. Compressed air can also be used for plasma gouging on carbon steel.

      Nitrogen is often used for higher current plasma systems and for cutting materials up to 3 inches thick. It produces excellent quality cuts on most materials.

      Oxygen is used when the highest quality mechanized cuts are desired on carbon steel up to 1 -1/4 inch thick. The cut face is smooth, and dross is easy to remove. Oxygen can also be used on stainless steel and aluminum, but it produces a rougher cut face.

      Argon-Hydrogen Mixtures are generally used for cutting stainless steel and aluminum. They produce a clean, high quality cut face. Argon-Hydrogen is required for mechanized cutting of any material more than 3 inches thick. This mixture also provides an excellent gas for plasma gouging on all materials

        Jpence- awesome right up , i did not know that i was thinking O2 would be bad for the plasma cutter being a flammable gas. Possibly damage torch and not cool it properly.

        I have used nitrogen on thin guage up to 1/2" it works great no issues i was using a nitro tank before i had my compressor.

        Im using a powermax 45 hypertherm

          Nitrogen would be my choice, way cheaper, Higher pressure so it lasts the longest.

              Glad to be able to help.
              I know for me it made a big difference when using the right gas for the right application. I am also going to have to agree with cruizer about the nitrogen. Usually the best all around way to go.

                Only use oxygen in plasma systems that are designed for oxygen. Most small portable plasma systems are designed to use compressed air...the use of pure oxygen in these systems can cause internal combustion that can damage or destroy your plasma torch, leads and power supply Oxygen is not flammable, but certainly supports combustion.

                You can get high pressure cylinders of compressed air, regulate the output to about 90 to 120 psi and use it with an air plasma system. Compressed nitrogen will also work in most air plasmas, but will not cut as well as air.

                      75/25 argon co2 doesn't cut very well.
                      i bought a cylinder off of Craigslist, thinking it was nitrogen.
                      cut like crap.
                      called air liquide, gave them the info on the tag, they told me it was 75/25 and a leased bottle to another weld supply.
                      ill use it up and go give it back
                      I got it cheap so I'm not worried.
